The tradeoff is, of course, less space to put things in; which can create a cramped and cluttered environment. Knocking out walls and adding more rooms isn’t always the answer: If you like your small home as it is, but need some extra space, using the space better is the key.

The longer someone lives in a home the more furniture and “extras:” accumulate. The first step in remodeling a small home is to use the space more efficiently: it’s not about SIZE, but efficiency. It’s how you use the space, not how big the space is.

Reorganize. The longer someone lives in a space, the more they acquire. Extra furniture, “knickknacks” and memorabilia, added to the chairs, tables, TV, stereos and other things you live with can make your home feel cramped and uncomfortable.

The key is: use the space more efficiently:

Built-in multipurpose storage units and an Entertainment Center that can hold books, TV, DVDs and Stereo.

Built-in buffet and extra cabinets in the kitchen creates more storage space and adds natural light, opening up the floor space and “expands” a small space.

Carpeting makes a room look smaller. Adding wood or laminate flooring will create the illusion of space, and the more natural light you have falling on your floor, the larger it will seem.

Large ceramic tiling in your kitchen and bathroom makes them look larger and easier to clean.

A pass-through window to the kitchen and widening doorways and archways provides a more open concept , making the house feel larger.

An established, experienced home renovator such as Houseworks Unlimited can save you time, effort and expense as well.
